In remembrance of Dmitry Ioffe
Obituary for a higly appreciated and dedicated member of the Minerva Fellowship Committee
It is with profound sadness that the Minerva Stiftung mourns for the passing of Professor Dimitri Ioffe.
Professor Dimitri Ioffe passed away in Israel on October 1st at just 57 years of age.
Everlasting committment and passion as a Committee member
Dmitry Ioffe had served as member in the Minerva Fellowship Committee since 2015. As a great supporter of young scientists, he was not only very committed when it came to his own scientific field, but enriched the committee`s work and discussions vividly with smart and differentiated contributions and his alert mind.
A cross-country life for mathematics
Dmitry Ioffe was born 1963 in Moscow, where he received a M.Sc. in System Engineering from the Moscow Mining Institute in 1985. Four years after his repatriation to Israel in 1987, he received a D.Sc. degree in Mathematics at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. Various academic appointments and visiting positions led him to the US, to Canada, to Japan, to France, Great Britain, Switzerland and Italy. From the beginning of his scientific career, he had also very close scientific relations with German research institutions: In 1995, he joined the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics in Berlin for two years, which was followed by many other research stays in Germany. The closest tie was with the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics at the University of Bonn. Since 2007, Dmitry Ioffe was professor at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management at Technion in Haifa. Professor Ioffe's scientific achievements have been outstanding in his field and were variously awarded, last with the Humboldt Research Award in 2011.
The Minerva Stiftung does not only lose a committee member with a more than broad expertise in the field of mathematics and huge dedication to the work of the German-Israeli Fellowship Committee, but also a reliable, highly esteemed friend and a person with great humor. We are very grateful for the time that could be spent with Dima and will bear him in remembrance. Our deepest condolences to his family.
